Confirm that your vehicle and equipment qualify
MERUS trails are for eligible full-size vehicles. UTVs, ATVs, and motorcycles are not permitted. Most 4×4 routes require true four-wheel drive with low range, and every trail vehicle must carry a working GMRS radio and fire extinguisher.

Choose an experience that fits
A trail color is a planning aid, not a guarantee that a route fits every vehicle or driver.
New to canyon driving
Start with the current Trail Guide, ask staff which Green routes are open, or reserve a guided Green tour.
Experienced driver
Use the current rating, obstacle notes, bypass information, and vehicle requirements to choose a route.
Want structured instruction
STAGE5 is a separate educational course for foundational and advanced off-road driving and recovery skills.

Green Trails
The least technical marked routes. Current conditions and individual obstacles can still require careful vehicle placement.

More technical terrain where vehicle clearance, tires, recovery points, and driver experience matter. Check the current route notes before entering.

Black & Purple Trails
Highly technical terrain for properly modified vehicles and experienced drivers. Rental Jeeps are not allowed on Black or Purple trails. Follow the exact requirements in the current Trail Guide.

Requirements and equipment
Required before arrival
- Valid guest admission and valid 4×4 access for the vehicle
- A current MERUS waiver for every visitor
- An eligible full-size vehicle; most routes require four-wheel drive with low range
- Proof of current vehicle liability insurance
- A working GMRS radio and working fire extinguisher in the vehicle
- The current Trail Guide or map saved for offline use
- Route-appropriate recovery points and recovery equipment
Recommended to bring
- At least one capable trail partner when attempting remote or technical terrain
- Extra drinking water, food, sun protection, weather layers, and a first-aid kit
- Enough fuel for the planned route and a delay

Trail access is not the same as Park Office or lodging hours. Follow the current arrival instructions and any time shown in your confirmation.

Can I bring an ATV, UTV, side-by-side, or motorcycle?
No. MERUS off-road routes are for eligible full-size vehicles; ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and motorcycles are not permitted.
Does an AWD vehicle qualify?
Most 4×4 routes require true four-wheel drive with low range. Do not assume that AWD qualifies; contact the Park Office with the exact vehicle and planned route before traveling.
Is recovery service guaranteed?
No. Arrive prepared to self-recover. Staff assistance depends on conditions and staffing, and fees may apply.
